World Music Day or Fête de la Musique is celebrated on June 21st every year to coincide with the summer solstice. The objective of the festival is to promote talent and celebrate the scope and diversity of music in all its genres. On this day, professional and amateur musicians are encouraged to perform live for free. Concerts are held in open areas and public places for everyone to participate.

Fête de la Musique began in France and has since spread to more than a hundred countries worldwide. In India, the Kolkata Music Academy celebrated World Music day by performing works by the Great Masters of European Classical music like Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Bartok. Works by Rabindranath Tagore were also performed at the event.
