A complete Robotic Camp designed by IITians

In the summer of 2010, Reliance World in association with robo.in conducted ROBOCAMP™—a complete robotic camp for school-going children in classes VII to XII. ROBOCAMP™ was held at Reliance World stores in 24 cities across India.

Researched and developed by robo.in—a division of ThinkLABS, incubated at SINE, IIT Bombay—ROBOCAMP™ is a certified course that teaches students how to build and program robots using hardware and software. ROBOCAMP™ is designed to demonstrate theories of Science and Mathematics, nurture scientific exploration and ignite an interest in Robotics technology. The children who participated in ROBOCAMP™ learnt the principles of robotics and applied them in hands-on robot building sessions.

There were separate batches for Juniors and Seniors. Students in classes IV to VI attended ROBOCAMP™ Junior while those in classes VII to XII were part of ROBOCAMP™ Senior. Qualified instructors from robo.in taught the participants. The duration of each ROBOCAMP™ batch was 6 days. The participants began by studying the theories and principles of Science and Mathematics using multi-media based learning content and then applied these theories to build various kinds of robots.

The participants of ROBOCAMP™ Junior were provided with an ergonomically designed robotic kit called ROBONAUT™. It consisted of electrical and mechanical building blocks and necessary tools to construct robots. The participants were taught the basic concepts of physics and electricity and how to design various mechanical structures through the proper usage of tools. Then, they went on to build remote controlled robots.

ROBOCAMP™ Senior was slightly more advanced in that the participants were taught how to build and program robots using CiMPLE, an interactive visual programming software specially designed for kids. Each participant was provided with the i-PITARA™ kit, consisting of a reprogrammable unit, multiple sensors, mechanical construction blocks and necessary tools.
The participants of ROBOCAMP™ Senior learnt advanced concepts of physics and electricity, programming and logic building, problem solving approaches and much more.

More than 1200 children participated in ROBOCAMP™. A total of 192 ROBOCAMP™ batches— 89 Junior and 103 Senior—were held at 66 different Reliance World stores in 24 cities across India.

On the last day of ROBOCAMP™, a competition was held in which the participants were required to programme their robots to play a game of football or sumo wrestling. The gaming arena was charged with excitement as each of the participants cheered and fine-tuned their robots to win the game.

At the end of ROBOCAMP™, participants took home the robots they had built along with the robotic kit. They were also awarded their certificates.
